PCNA disseminates information, including local or national legislator contact information, on critical issues affecting cardiovascular health in the U.S. and the world. PCNA Participates in Washington DC: Congressional Prevention Caucus Examines Sodium Regulation - April 22, 2010
With the recent release of the Institute of Medicine report calling for Federal regulation reducing sodium levels in processed foods, Partnership for Prevention and the Congressional Prevention Caucus held a congressional briefing, Reducing Sodium Consumption: Is it Time?, to review the latest scientific findings from the CDC on sodium and highlight policy options, including key initiatives by food manufacturers, that could save lives by reducing the amount of sodium in manufactured and packaged foods. Speakers included Congressman James Moran (D-VA); Darwin Labarthe, MD, MPH, PhD, Director, Division of Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Thomas Farley, MD, MPH, Commissioner, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; Mark Broadhurst, Director, Corporate Affairs and State Public Policy, Mars Incorporated; and Suzanne Hughes, RN, MSN, Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association. Dr. Robert Gould, Partnership’s President and CEO, moderated the discussion and noted “over the past 30-40 years the consumption of sodium in the diet has increased to levels that have alarmed clinicians and the public health community. 77% of the sodium in our diets come from processed and restaurant foods. Engagement of the corporate and public health community to reduce dietary sodium in a spirit of shared concern and commitment is an important model for success in community prevention.”
