TAKING WOMEN'S HEALTH TO HEART

COURSE OVERVIEW:
It's a fact. More American women die each year from cardiovascular disease than from any other cause, including breast cancer. Yet, most women still fail to make the connection between cardiovascular disease risk factors and their personal risk for heart disease.

In this program, Dr. John D. Bisognano, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Clinical Preventive Cardiology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and registered dietitian Roberta Anding, provide an update on cardiovascular disease in women, including the latest in research, trends, treatment strategies and effective lifestyle interventions. Topics reviewed include how women differ from men with regard to risk factors, disease development and treatment; the latest findings on cardiovascular risks associated with hormone replacement therapy; women and metabolic syndrome; and the effective nutrition and lifestyle strategies that can help your female patients and clients reduce their personal risk for or manage heart disease.

FORMAT:
Seminar (web-based presentation) including two 30-minute expert guest speaker presentations followed by a 15-minute Question & Answer session. (75 minutes)

AUDIENCE:
Nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians/nutritionists, and other healthcare providers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe current research and trends in cardiovascular disease.
  2. Explain the differences between women and men with regard to heart disease, including risk factors, development, symptoms and treatment.
  3. Instruct clients or patients on nutritional and lifestyle strategies to reduce their personal risk for or manage heart disease.
