COURSE OVERVIEW:
In this program, noted vitamin D expert Dr. Michael F. Holick will provide an overview of the biology of vitamin D and why an endemic lack of vitamin D may be the mechanism by which many diseases correlate with latitude (hypertension, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and some cancers); emerging evidence for vitamin D deficiency as a cardiovascular risk factor; review the toxicology of vitamin D and evidence for the safety of physiologically meaningful doses; and discuss the potential mechanisms for a cardioprotective effect of vitamin D.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this program, attendees will be able to:
- Discuss the epidemiologic and clinical evidence for vitamin D deficiency as a cardiovascular risk factor and potential mechanisms for the cardioprotective effect of vitamin D.
- Describe emerging data linking vitamin D administration with improved cardiac function.
- Identify current intake levels and risk factors for 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency.
- Describe the appropriate biochemical marker for nutritional vitamin D sufficiency, the circulating level that should be attained and current clinical recommendations for vitamin D replacement.
