COURSE OVERVIEW:
This course outlines the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in general, walnuts in particular, and discusses recommendations for relaying this information to patients.

AUDIENCE:
The audience for this course is nurses and nurse practitioners specializing in cardiovascular disease prevention and management.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the different types of fatty acids
  2. Distinguish between marine and plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids
  3. Describe the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids
  4. Describe key studies demonstrating the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular disease prevention
  5. Describe the recommendations for omega-3 fatty acid intake
  6. Describe the health benefits of walnuts
  7. Describe key studies demonstrating the effects of walnuts on cardiovascular disease risk factors
  8. Describe the nutrient composition of walnuts versus other nuts
  9. Discuss recommendations for incorporating walnuts as a source of omega-3 fatty acids into the diet
