COURSE OVERVIEW: The purpose of this presentation is to provide a summary of the physiological changes experienced in the peri-menopausal transition. Pathological changes, including premature and induced menopause will be discussed. Other disease processes that can mimic or occur simultaneously will be presented, including thyroid disease, osteoporosis, cancer, and heart disease. The role of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies will be introduced. Lastly, a summary of the controversy over hormone replacement therapy will be addressed and will include current recommendations for therapy. PRESENTER: Sue A.
