Increasing Awareness and Improving Management of Venous Thromboembolism
Through the Application of Accepted Evidence-Based Guidelines

CONTINUING EDUCATION
RN, NP: 2 CE Credits (includes 1 contact hour pharmacology)
Release Date: November 2009

COURSE OVERVIEW:
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) are collectively known as VTE. An estimated 300,000 new cases of VTE occur in the United States annually despite the existence of well-documented risk factors, preventive therapies and treatment regimens that are readily available in the form of evidence-based guidelines. This course provides an overview of VTE that includes: 1) how to perform a VTE risk assessment; 2) the use of non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies for VTE prevention; and 3) a discussion of quality improvement strategies to improve health systems compliance with evidence-based guidelines.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe the high prevalence of VTE and the impact VTE has on morbidity and mortality.
  2. List risk factors and high risk patient populations associated with VTE.
  3. Identify and apply consensus standards, performance measures and guidelines designed to improve the outcomes of patients at risk for VTE.
  4. Give examples of non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments used in the prevention and management of VTE.
