MEETING OVERVIEW:
Join us for a half-day program to examine: the latest practice guidelines in the management of acute heart failure from both the inpatient and outpatient perspective with a special focus on the geriatric population; ambulatory and home blood pressure monitoring in the management of hypertension; and the prevention of stroke through the assessment of inflammatory biomarkers. Learn how to use the information presented in your practice and improve outcomes for cardiovascular disease prevention. Attendees will earn 3 contact hours of continuing education.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

Management of the Acute Heart Failure Patient
  1. Discuss risk factors and pathophysiolgy of heart failure.
  2. List the key components of the physical exam in the assessment of the patient with heart failure.
  3. Describe the role of invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tools used in the baseline assessment of the patient with heart failure.
  4. Explain the importance of various laboratory tests in the initial assessment and ongoing assessment of the patient with heart failure.
  5. Outline the new AHA classification system (stages A-D) used in the evaluation and ongoing assessment of the patient with heart failure.

Stroke Prevention: Role of Inflammatory Markers
  1. Categorize a patient's risk status for stroke as high risk, intermediate risk, or low risk.
  2. Explain the role of inflammatory factors in atherosclerosis and ischemic stroke.
  3. Given a case example, identify two evidence-based strategies to lower stroke risk.

The Role of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring in the Management of Hypertension: An Alternative to Office Visits?
  1. Describe how home blood pressure monitoring can be used to improve hypertension diagnosis and treatment.
  2. Implement appropriate home blood pressure monitoring techniques based on new national guidelines.
  3. Identify methods for improving hypertension control in clinical practice settings.

The audience for this course consists of nurses and nurse practitioners specializing in cardiovascular disease prevention and management.
