PCNA and the American Nurses Foundation have partnered to award a $5,000 grant to encourage the research career development of nurses. In support of the mission of PCNA, individuals whose research is focused on cardiovascular disease prevention may apply.
The applicant must become a member of PCNA upon acceptance of the grant. The proposed research should
address the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Presentation of results is expected at the annual meeting
of the PCNA within two years of completion
PCNA Healthy Living Leadership Award
Deadline: The deadline for this year's award has now passed.
This award aims to provide nurses with incentive, recognition and resources to create, implement and evaluate healthy lifestyle programs for patients, workplaces, communities or schools.
- Current PCNA member
- Primary person responsible for the creation, implementation and/or evaluation of a new or existing healthy lifestyle program
- Award monies must be utilized for “hard goods” such as equipment, paper/printing, videos, and food samples and not for personnel (salaries/benefits) or space rental. Include a budget plan.
- Be able to provide a summary of the project in a poster format to be presented at a PCNA Annual Symposium within 2 years of receiving the award. Provide an evaluation and outcomes summary.
CVD Prevention Graduation Award
Faculty members interested in nominating a student for the 2012 award should contact Bonny Wolter.
The cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention award is for the graduate student who has demonstrated a strong commitment to the prevention of cardiovascular disease through excellence in nursing practice or research. The winner of this award will receive a scholarship for registration for the next PCNA Annual Symposium and one year free membership in PCNA.
To be eligible for this award, one must:
- Be a current member or join PCNA
- Be graduating from a Masters or Doctoral Program in nursing
- Have demonstrated a significant contribution to CVD prevention; through a practice initiative, publication, research, community project, or other prevention leadership efforts
- Have the potential to contribute to CVD prevention in his/her future career
Annual Symposium Scholarships

Each year, PCNA allocates a portion of its resources to support scholarships for members to attend the Annual Symposium. Selection for this scholarship will be based on academic and career achievement as well as financial need. This scholarship will cover full conference registration fees and materials. To be eligible for this scholarship, one must:
- Be a current member or join PCNA
- Provide current CV
- Demonstrate financial need
- Agree to provide PCNA with a report within six (6) months after the conference describing the impact this program had made on your education, research, practice, and/or leadership development. The PCNA National Office will include this report along with acceptance packet, if selected.
Excellence In Clinical Practice Award
Sponsored by PCNA and the American Heart Association's Council on Cardiovascular Nursing, this award recognizes and encourages excellence in cardiovascular nursing clinical practice. The winner will be recognized at the annual dinner of the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing held during the AHA Scientific Sessions. The winner will also receive: $1,000, an engraved plaque, complimentary council dinner ticket, recognition and presentation of the plaque at the council dinner, and complimentary registration to the AHA Scientific Sessions. To be eligible for this award, one must:
- Be nominated by an AHA Council on Cardiovascular Nursing member
- Have an established career as a CV nurse clinician
- Have had a membership in the AHA Council on Cardiovascular Nursing for a minimum of five years
- Have been actively involved in the AHA at the affiliate, local or national level within the last five years, and have a history of contributions to AHA goals and objectives

Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association Fellowship
Deadline: The deadline for this year's award has now passed.
Fellowship provides a means to recognize and award excellence in leadership within PCNA and volunteer service to PCNA. PCNA Fellows will be recognized on the PCNA website and in the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, acknowledged at the PCNA Annual Symposium, and be entitled to use the designation of Fellow of PCNA (FPCNA). This designation reflects not only the professional stature of the Fellow, but also his/her record of valuable service to the association. In order to be named a PCNA Fellow, one must:
- Be nominated by a current PCNA Fellow
- Be an active and current member of PCNA for at least four years
- Have attended at least one Annual Symposium within the past two years
- Be an active participant on committees of PCNA, involved in the development of PCNA
educational projects, and/or other involvement in CVD prevention

2011 Award Winner!
This award recognizes and encourages excellence in clinical practice of cardiovascular prevention by nurses. The winner will be recognized at the opening of the PCNA Annual Symposium with a plaque and $1,000. The winner will also receive complimentary registration, paid air/auto travel expenses, and 3-night hotel stay to attend the Symposium.
To be eligible for this award, one must:
- Be nominated by a current PCNA member
- Be a current active member of PCNA for 3 or more years
- Attend the PCNA Annual Symposium and receive the award in person
